Rajasthan is all set to host the Kumbhalgarh Festival from December 1-3 this year. The festival is celebrated in full swing for the last 6 centuries.
Organized by the Department of Tourism of Rajasthan, Kumbalgarh Festival hosts some of the finest talents of the country. It showcases all the colors of Rajasthani culture through its dance performance and other activities. The competitions and programs carried out during the fest escalate the zeal and enthusiasm of the people and display what it was like in the bygone era of Mewar. Light and sound shows are also conducted with the Kumbhalgarh Fort in the background.
A little bit about Kumbalgarh Fort
Built over a period of 15 years under the expert supervision of the famed architect Mandan, Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan is perfectly perched between eleven peaks of the Aravalli ranges. Its strategic position atop a high ridge camouflaged by the surrounding peaks has made it one of the most important and probably the only impregnable fort of the state.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kumbhalgarh Fort holds a very special place in history and in the hearts of the Rajputs. During the festival, the Kumbhalgarh Fort turns into a magnificent sight with all the decorations and lights.
What happens at the Kumbalgarh Festival
This 3-day festival brings together the art and culture of other states as well as hosts competitions to bring out the zeal and enthusiasm of the visitors. Traditional artists are called from all parts of India to showcase their craftsmanship from jewelers to potters. Some of the country’s famous artists also come to perform and entertain the crowds. In the end, the performers invite audiences to join and shake a leg.
In daylight hours, take a walk around the fort and witness its impressive turrets. The festival puts on display the finest of Rajasthan’s heritage gems: handicrafts, ethnic attires, handmade jewelry and a plethora of souvenirs. Besides shopping to your heart’s content, you can also get an insight into how these traditional articles are crafted.
The festival also boasts several competitions, such as tug of war, turban-tying, musical chairs, which make for a fun watch. A particular highlight of the festival is the puppet show that invites a large number of spectators.
And at night, with the yellow lights illuminating each and every corner of the fort, it is a spectacle which is not to be missed. All the chandeliers are brought out for display along with other royal works of art.
The Kumbalgarh Festival is a melting pot of traditions, colors and folk dance and music. Pulsating with vibrancy and rigor, it is a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the rich culture of Rajasthan in an immersive manner.
