If nature and wildlife are always part of your travel plans, you’ll love spending a day at Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary in Mandya District just outside Bangalore. The sanctuary is a three hour drive from the city, and a gorgeous portion of the Cauvery river runs through the sanctuary where you can sit while you watch birds. is a favourite destination among bird enthusiasts. One can observe exotic migratory birds like egrets, partridges, and herons up close on boat rides. It is one of the best bird-watching spots in India, where you can spot migratory birds from North America, Siberia, and Australia.
The sanctuary is only open from 8.30am to 5.45pm each day, so it would help you to leave Bangalore early and reach by the time the sanctuary has fully opened. The parks and greenery on the banks of the river here make a great spot for day-long picnics.
If you’re looking to club a visit to Ranganthittu with some other sightseeing, you can head to Srirangapatna to explore Tipu’s Summer Palace, Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon and Daria Daulat Bagh. If you’re not planning to spend too much time here, you can also make it part of your itinerary on your way to places like Mysore and Coorg.
