#60DaysOfSummer – Yak Race in Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake

Whether you’re in Sikkim for a relaxed vacation or have plans to go on a trekking and hiking adventure, Gurudongmar Lake is one of the places that should be on your list either way. One of the highest lakes in India, Gurudongmar Lake is quite a sight to behold. And while you’re there, you should catch the yak race that happens in the Thangu Valley in the summer each year.

The lake is considered sacred, because in winter when most of the lake turns to ice, there is a portion of the lake that does not freeze. Because the lake is at an altitude of 17,800 feet and can be uncomfortable for people with respiratory and circulatory problems, it’s advisable to get a clean bill of health before embarking on treks here.

HOW TO GET THERE

Gurudongmar Lake is at the end of a long trek from Lachen. You could get in touch with trekking groups who will help organize a trek to the lake.
